Whitetail geek and ScentLok Marketing Manager Steve Allie takes layering very seriously, especially when it comes to making your way to the stand. “A lot of hunters put on their complete outwear set before taking a step into the woods,” says Allie. “That’s a mistake. You’re going to sweat and produce unwanted odors and also make yourself colder when you get situated in the stand. Whenever possible, walk in wearing your base layer top and pack in your outerwear and layers to minimize perspiration.”
To that, Allie suggests wearing gloves and try not to touch anything walking in. “You have the potential to leave scent on everything you touch,” he implores. “I even put a burst of ScentLok 4X Field Spray on my boots before making the trek.”

A Few Parting Tips
Again, taking whitetail hunting as serious as life and death, Allie is highly strategic about entering and exiting the woods. “Have multiple entry and exist points from your stand based on the wind,” he says. “You always want to be walking into the wind, or at least quartering against it. And it might sound elementary but steer clear of your shooting area, too. Again, it’s about not getting detected.”
Allie goes on to say exiting is equally as important. “You for sure don’t want wind blowing into known bedding areas. That can really disrupt their behavior and ruin the next day’s hunt.”
