Deer’s Response to Odor

A Whitetail Deer’s primary interaction with its environment is through its nose. A buck can smell odors undetectable to humans. As a result, whitetails can pinpoint a scent source with remarkable accuracy. Slight differences in triggered receptors tell deer how to respond: hunker down, continue browsing or run. The majority of a buck’s brain is devoted to the detection, perception and evaluation of odors with no higher thinking. That’s why you can read a buck’s nose by observing body language. It’s also why you can use your brain and gear to outwit him.
